I went to test drive a 98 gst that i was thinking about picking up due to the really cheap price. It does not have any cats when i give it gas and even at idle quite a bit of smoke comes out of the exhuast. car seems to run fine has 129k possibly a new engine due to writting on valve cover (guy doesn't know, he hasn't had it that long) has a brand new turbo full decatted dp. how hard would it be able to tell if it blew a head gasket? or if the smoke is just from it not having cats? Thanks

oh also the tach was just chilling at 3K during idle...when the car was first turned on it went to 3k after it warmed up a bit it went to a normal 750rpm then when i went for the test drive it went back up to 3k and suggestions? Thanks

Cat or not cat it should put out any smoke. The idle sits at 3K?! If it has a blown head gasket white smoke will come out of the exhaust

I wouldnt buy it.. Sounds like trouble....
No cat doesnt make any difference on smoke (never would) .. I drove without a cat for quite a while..
bottom line is.. If this guy hasnt had the car that long and is trying to ditch it.. What does that tell you?
Definitely not a good running car..
Its really impossible to tell where the smoke is coming from by just looking at it..
there are some general rules of thumb that can differentiate between valve stem seals or if its water or oil..
But count on a tear down and rebuild if it smokes.. Ive had 4g63's over 100k miles that never blew any smoke..

How cheap is it? Sounds like a good parts car to me.

And if you do that, I would like your extra 7bolt parts... I have visions of a 7bolt powered lawn tractor

it doesn't actually idle at 3k the tach was just trippin and said it was at 3k however it was idling perfect...so the smoke couldn't be caused from old or bad fuel?..yeah the car runs great he only wants 2,800 but the dude seams kinda shady..it had front end damage and he did the repair work by himself. I had cash with me but backed out of the deal...i'm going to bring a friend of mine to take a look at it and tell me what he thinks....I'm worried because the car has to go to test only smog...and even if i throw a cat in there i doubt it will pass. :?

Well, I do mow my lawn... and it is 6 acres of grass... but I don't think I'd be mowing too many lawns with a 7 bolt... I also have a mazda at the bottom of the property (came with the place) I think it's like a RX3 or something... REALLY old (car's been sitting there over 20 years) and it has a complete rotary in it... was thinking about how well that would make my lawn mower run... I have all these crazy ideas and no money to back them up... really saddens me sometimes... but I'm going to live forever (or die trying) so I should have plenty of time to work on my crazy transplants... 'sept the 4g63 powered challenger (I have a 6 bolt sitting in the corner waiting for a rebuild) cause my pop just sold that car... made me mucho annoyed.
As for the Car...
Hey, if it idles good, there's prolly a short on the tach... offer him 1500, show him the cash, and see what he says. If it's all straight, and runs reasonably well, that's not too bad a price (I paid 2000 for a 95 gsx that had enough rear end damage to be considored totaled... and 2 parts cars later, I'm $3500 (including all 3 cars) into the project and almost have it complete with the mods listed in my profile.

Well, I don't KNOW that it's an RX3... it's a really old Mazda, no badging, and that was the closest thing I could come up with on google. I had intended to pull the motor out this summer, but if you want the rest of the car, it's yours, you might even be able to talk me into leaving the motor in it. I'll take some pictures of it tomorrow when I get home from work.

Sorry to thread jack, but you should walk away from that car,
Start with something BONE STOCK that runs like a top ands smogs no problem,
and NEVER buy a modded car from a DSM'er, because if it was that good they would not be selling it for a cheap price.
