I had to get some parts at the dealer this week and despite the same 'ole Year, model, turbo or non turbo they asked for the VIN too. Anyone have an insight as to what that is about?

I really don't care, it doesn't prevent them from getting me the wrong part.. like giving me a Montero thermostat kit when I really need a GTO kit. I was wondering if they are doing part tracking like, If I buy 20 engine gasket kits off the same vin, mark them up on top of the already outrageous price and try and resell them making a buck or two, or, if it goes on the Carfax database, "Hey, it shows here that Gabe bought a new oil cap! This car is a winner!"

Lots of dealerships do that, I just refuse to give it to them... not sure why, I just don't feel comfterable givin out information like that when it's not needed. I'd like to know why also.

same reason why you punch it into the Mitsu CAPS system, which is what they use. it's just to look up your specific vehicle for the parts. cause the CA cars have diff parts sometimes for emission. plus, it gives you the right colour if it's an interior piece.

exactly,i used to hate this too when i had to order dealer parts at the shop, but it gives them all the info they need, every single letter or number stands for something and it just helps them to determine the correct part for you.I use to mess with them and give them the color, told em it had 4 wheels, acigarrete burn on the passanger seat and spongebob floor mats.lol

just give it to them. the vin will tell them more info about your car in 2 seconds than them asking the year, make, model, trim level, etc.

yea mostly they are just making sure they get you the right parts, but the parts guys at the mitsu dealerships are not too bright I always just call them with a number straight off caps to save me the hassle, like 1g 6 bolt eclipses have 3 different part numbers for front covers/oil pumps yet they are all the same.
